How to make video ads with AI (step by step)

AI can now turn a handful of brand assets into finished, ready-to-run video ads in minutes — no camera, no editor, and no agency retainer. But "use AI" is vague advice. This guide walks through what these tools actually do, what you need to feed them, and how to get ads you'd genuinely put money behind.

What "AI video ads" actually means

There are a few different things people call AI video ads. It helps to separate them:

  • Text-to-video — you describe a scene and a model generates it from scratch. Great for imaginative b-roll, weaker at showing your specific product accurately.
  • Image-to-video — you give the tool a real photo (say, your product) and it animates it into a moving shot. This keeps your product looking exactly like it does in real life.
  • Assembly + templates — AI arranges clips, captions, music, and an end card into a finished ad sized for each platform.

The best product-ad tools combine all three: they build a scene, place your real product in it, animate it, and cut it into a finished ad. That's the approach that produces something you can actually launch.

Step 1 — Gather your inputs

Output quality tracks input quality. Before you generate anything, get together:

  • Your logo (a transparent PNG is ideal)
  • Your brand colors and a font, if you have one
  • 3–5 clean product photos — well-lit, high resolution, ideally on a plain background
  • A one-line description of the product and who it's for

That's usually enough. If your photos are blurry or low-res, the ad will be too — so it's worth using your best shots.

Step 2 — Generate a batch, not a single ad

The advantage of AI is volume. Instead of laboring over one "perfect" ad, generate a batch of variations — different scenes, hooks, and pacing — and let performance tell you which direction works. A good workflow produces dozens of finished cuts from the same inputs in a single pass.

Step 3 — Review and refine

Watch the batch and keep the ones that feel on-brand and clear. Look for three things: the product is recognizable, the first second grabs attention, and the message is legible without sound. Most tools let you tweak the scene, copy, or pacing without starting over.

Step 4 — Size for every channel

A 9:16 vertical ad for Reels and TikTok, a 1:1 square for feed, a 16:9 for YouTube. The same ad should export in every aspect ratio so you're not re-shooting for each platform. This is where AI saves the most time versus traditional production.

Step 5 — Launch, measure, iterate

Ship a few variations, watch which ones hold attention and convert, then generate more like the winners. Because each new batch costs minutes instead of weeks, you can iterate on creative far faster than a traditional agency cycle allows.

A note on regulated products

If you sell in a regulated category — cannabis, alcohol, supplements — your ads have to follow state and federal advertising rules. It's worth running finished ads through a compliance check before they go live, ideally built right into production so nothing ships that shouldn't.
